Imam Siraj Wahhaj
Imam Siraj
Imam Siraj Wahhaj, currently the Imam of Masjid Al-Taqwa in Brookyn, New York, accepted Islam in 1969. He received Imam training at Ummul Qura University of Makkah in 1978 and has gone on to become a national and international speaker on Islam. Imam Wahhaj has been Vice President of ISNA U.S. since 1997 and has served on Majlis Ash-Shura since 1987. He is a past member of ISNA's Planning Committee and has served as a member of the Board of Advisors for NAIT from 1989-1993. He is also a member of the Board of Advisors for the American Muslim Council.Imam Wahhaj has appeared on several national television talk shows and interviews especially about his anti-drug campaigns. He received high praises from the media and NYPD for initiating anti-drug patrol in Brooklyn, New York in 1988. Among other achievements, Imam Wahhaj was the first person to give an Islamic invocation to the United States Congress. Imam Siraj Wahhaj is originally from New York.

Altaf Husain holds a doctoral degree from the Howard University School of Social Work in Washington D.C. His research interests include the integration of immigrant and refugee families, and especially Muslim adolescents, in the United States . He serves as Executive Assistant for Academic Affairs in the Office of the Provost at Howard University and is a double alumnus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio . Altaf is a former two-term national president of the Muslim Students Association, a current executive committee member of the Muslim Alliance in North America , and a board member of the Peaceful Families Project . He is married and has two sons.

Dr. Jamal Badawi

Dr. Jamal Badawi is "Professor Emeritus" at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he served as Professor of both Management and Religious Studies. During its May, 2008 Convocation, Saint Mary's University granted him an Honorary Doctorate of Civil law in recognition of his promotion of " a better understanding of Islam" and contribution " to civil society around the world" He completed his undergraduate studies in Cairo, Egypt and his Masters and Ph.D. degrees at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.
Dr. Badawi is the author of several works on Islam, including books, chapters in books and articles. Some of his works are available also on the internet including Gender Equity in Islam available on www.google.com/ and a 352-segment television series on Islam, now available [in audio format] at http://www.islamonline.net/ under "Reading Islam", sub-link "Islam in 176Hours". Other interviews and articles on topics such as "Apostasy", "Muslim/Non-Muslim Relations" and Muslim Contribution to Civilization are also available at the Islamonline site.
In addition to his participation in lectures, seminars and interfaith dialogues in North America, Dr. Badawi has been frequently invited as guest speaker on Islam in nearly 38 other countries. He is a member of the Islamic Fiqh Council of North America, The European Council of Fatwa and Research and the International Union of Muslim Scholars. He has been serving as a volunteer Imam of the local Muslim community in the Halifax Regional Municipality since 1970. Dr. Badawi is father of 5 children and grandfather of 17 [so far!, mashallah]

 

Dr. Zahid H. Bukhari

Dr. Zahid H. Bukhari is the National President of Islamic Circle of North America. He is also Director of the American Muslim Studies Program and Fellow at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Previously, he served as Director of Pew Project entitled "Muslims in American Public Square." Dr. Bukhari has a Masters in Economics from the University of Karachi and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. His research interests have focused on religion and public policy in the United States. He has vast experience in all aspects of survey research. During 1993-1995, he participated in a national study of the Islamic centers/mosques across North America conducted by the Islamic Resource Institute, Los Angles, CA. He has published and presented papers on Islam and development, Muslim public opinion in the US and other related topics in national and international forums. Dr. Bukhari has an extensive experience of working with various Islamic organizations and also with other religious groups of USA. He was one of the founders of the National Islamic Shura Council, a representative body of the American Muslims consisting of four national Islamic organizations. Dr. Bukhari also worked as Secretary General of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and chairman of ICNA Relief, a not-for-profit relief organization. Dr.Bukhari is married and has two sons and two daughters.

Sh. Yasir Qadhi

Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences. Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah.
His published works include Riya'a: The Hidden Shirk, Du'aa: The Weapon of the Believer, and An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur'an.
Yasir Qadhi is currently pursuing his doctorate, in Religious Studies, at Yale University in New Haven, CT. At AlMaghrib Instiute he teaches the Light of Guidance and the Light Upon Light seminars, which focus on aqeedah.




Sh. Mohammed Faqih
Mohammed Faqih
Hailing from a lineage of scholarship, Mohammed Faqih traces his roots back to the ancient city of Harar in the Horn of Africa. Originally from Yemen, his forefathers immigrated to East Africa and played a central role in the Islamic history of the region.
Mohammed Faqih completed a B.A. in Islamic Studies from the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America in Fairfax, VA, and graduated in Quran Memorization and Recitation from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Previously, he has held the positions of Imam [spiritual leader and advisor] at the Islamic Community Center of Laurel in Laurel, MD and at the Islamic Center of San Diego in San Diego, CA. He has also acted as an assistant Imam at the Islamic Association of Raleigh, NC and as a teacher at the Al-Iman School in the same community.
Currently, Mohammed Faqih resides with his family in Orange County and is an instructor with AlMaghrib Institute, an organization that provides trademark double-weekend seminars leading students towards a bachelor's degree in Islamic Studies. His most recent course of instruction include The Rules of Engament; Islamic Code of Etihics, and Route 114, Sciences of the Qur'an.

Dr. Talat Sultan is a former President of ICNA and has received his Masters in Islamic History and Culture from University of Karachi. He received his Doctorate of Education from the University of California, Los Angeles. He served as Professor of Education and Chairman, Division of Education and Psychology at Barber-Scotia College, Concord, NC. He served as Director of Education for Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) for many years. He served as Senior Research Fellow in Islamic Education at Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He served as principal of Pleasant View School, Memphis, Islamic Foundation School, Chicago and Phoenix Metro Islamic School for the last seven years. He has also served as: Author and Director of four federal projects for in-service teacher education and community development. Consultant and resource person on Islamic education to the governments of Brunei and Malaysia, International Islamic Universities of Pakistan and Malaysia, Islamic communities centers of the Caribbeans and scores of Islamic schools in the U.S. and Canada. He is also the author of four books on Islamic Education.

 

Dr. Ingrid Mattson

Dr. Ingrid Mattson is the current President of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and served as ISNA Vice-President from 2001 to 2006. Dr. Mattson also currently serves as Director of Islamic Chaplaincy and Professor at the Macdonald Center for Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut. She earned her Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago in 1999; focusing on Islamic law and society. Her publications include studies on slavery, poverty, and Islamic legal theory. Prior to her Ph.D., Dr. Mattson obtained her B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

 

 

Dr. Sulayman Nyang

Dr. Sulayman Nyang is a naturalized American citizen originally from the African republic of the Gambia. His career as an Africanist academic and professor of African Studies spans more than 32 years. He joined the faculty of the African Studies Department at Howard University after receiving his PhD in 1974 in the field of government. Dr. Nyang has held administrative academic positions at Howard University; contributed to several expert panels on African affairs, handling a wide range of topics, including cultural, political, religious and social affairs. Dr. Nyang also served as First Secretary and Head of Chancery of the Gambian Embassy in Saudi Arabia and consultant to World Bank and United Nations agencies. He was the lead developer of the "African Voices Project" for the Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institute and Co-Principal Investigator of Muslims in the American Public Square (MAPS) Project; an initiative to foster greater understanding of Islam and Muslims in the United States. Professor Nyang has published profusely on a variety of issues affecting Africans in the diaspora and around the world. He has written or collaborated with other experts to write 11 books and more than 70 articles on Islam, African political, cultural, and development affairs. Dr. Nyang is also presently one of the Washington Post panelists writing for their online webpage on faith issues.

Shaykh Waleed Basyouni is a frequent guest speaker at Universities, Conventions, Radio Talk Shows, Television, Interfaith meetings, and community centers nationally and internationally. He is also a member of the North American Imam Federation (NAIF), Assembly of Muslim Jurists in America (AMJA)-Fatwa and Research Committee, Director of Texas Dawah Convention, and Advisor to numerous Islamic Societies/Organizations around the US. Shaykh Waleed Basyouni graduated with a Bachelors in Islamic Sciences from Al-Imam Muhammad University, KSA; did his Masters in Islamic Theology, World Religions and Modern Religious Sects from Al-Imam Muhammad University; and is currently working on his PhD Coursework in Theology. He is also an instructor at the American Open Un iversity in Alexandria, VA, USA, and serves as, the Imam of Clear Lake Islamic Center, Houston, TX, USA. Shaykh Waleed has Ijaazahs in reciting the Holy Quran and in several books of Hadeeth, awarded by various scholars. He studied under great scholars time such as Shaykh Ibn Baz, Abdul-Razzaq Afify and others. Shaykh Waleed is the latest addition to AlMaghrib Institute's faculty of instructors. His upcoming seminars with the Institute will focus on the articles of Faith.

 

Nouman Ali Khan
Nouman Ali Khan Nouman is the founder and CEO of Bayyinah, as well as the lead instructor for a number of Bayyinah courses including the ‘Fundamentals of Classical Arabic’ and ‘Divine Speech’. His first exposure to Arabic study was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he completed his elementary education. He continued Arabic grammar study in Pakistan, where he received a scholarship for ranking among the top 10 scores in the national Arabic studies board examinations in 1993. But his serious training in Arabic began in the United States in 1999 under Dr. Abdus-Samie, founder and formal principal of Quran College, Faisalabad, Pakistan who happened to be touring the US for intensive lectures in Tafsir and Arabic studies. Under Dr. Abdus-Samie, Nouman developed a keen methodical understanding of Arabic grammar. He further benefited from Dr. Abdus-Samie by internalizing his unique teaching methods and later translating his work into English for the benefit of his own students. Nouman served as professor of Arabic at Nassau Community College until `06 and has taught Modern Standard and Classical Arabic at various venues for nearly 7 years with over 10,000 students nationwide. Currently he has dedicated himself to a seven-year-long project, of conducting a linguistic & literary focus Qur’anic Tafseer series in English. Mahdi Bray

Sh. Muhammad Iqbal Nadvi holds a PhD in Islamic Shariah (law), with specialization in Jurisprudence (Fiqh). He has taught Islamic Shar'iah and Jurisprudence subject in King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, for six years and dealt with various subjects such as principles of jurisprudence (Usool Al-Fiqh), Islamic Culture, Islamic Political Thought, Islamic movements and Fiqh of Organization. He also has M.A. in Islamic law. Ummal Qura University, Makkah, KSA, 1983. He is licensed in Shariah from Islamic university, Madina, Saudi Arabia in 1978. He is currently the Imam of Masjid Al-Falah in Toronto, Canada, which serves as ICNA headquarters in Canada.

 

 

Sh. Ali Sulieman Ali
Sheikh Ali Sulaiman Ali was born in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. He spent much of his childhood in Ghana with various shuyukh. His curriculum there included Arabic sciences (such as grammar), Tawheed, Fiqh, Zudhiyyat (Ascetism), and Seerah of the Prophet (saw). After many years with his teachers, Dr. Ali completed his curriculum and moved on to Saudi Arabia where he enrolled in Medinas Islamic University. His curriculum included Quran,Hadith, Fiqh, Usul al Fiqh, Arabic Rhetoric, Comparative Religions, and many more traditional Islamic sciences. Sheikh Ali graduated with a B.A. in both Islamic Studies and Arabic from Islamic University in the year 1979. Upon graduation, Sheikh Ali traveled to America where he pursued both an M.A. and a PhD in Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI). Before receiving his doctorate, Sheikh Ali completed his dissertation on Tafsir bil Mathur, specifically dealing with the question of Hujja (the question of authority or binding proof), a question which had been virtually ignored otherwise. Sheikh Ali is the Director of Muslim Family Services, an ICNA Relief division, in Detroit, Michigan.
